NCAA Cancels Remaining Winter and Spring Championships

Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships.

This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, the NCAAs ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.

The NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships and NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships are among the winter sports championships to be cancelled. Both two-day events were scheduled for Thursday and Friday of this week. Bridgewater State University sophomore Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) qualified for the wrestling championships in the 184-pound weight class, while BSU senior Joshua Higgins (Fitchburg, Mass.) and sophomore Matthew Lighten (Dalton, Mass.) qualified for the indoor track & field championships in the 800-meter run and 200-meter dash, respectively.
