In his first year as a college assistant, native Iowan, Maurie Tomke brings an "Iowa Style" of wrestling to the Bears' wrestling program. He is a graduate of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa where he earned a degree in Business Administration, with a minor in Sports Management. He was also recruited to Morningside College to wrestle in the lighter weights.
A major shoulder injury suffered during his senior year in high school and then again after his redshirt season in college, ended his competitive career. He then turned his attention to coaching where he served as an assistant coach at Bishop Heelan Catholic High School and Sioux City East High School. Coach Tomke was able to help guide ten qualifiers to state with two becoming place winners. Coach Tomke also headed up the middle school wrestling at East Middle School in Sioux City along with the junior wrestling program that sent wrestlers to East Middle School.
Coach Tomke also served as an administrative assistant to Mr. Pete Isais, Director of National Events, USA Wrestling, at the World Team Trials which were held in Sioux City during May of 2006.
Tomke's goal at Bridgewater State is to produce quality people who are good wrestlers. Tomke says, "Wrestling is one of the most demanding sport activities. It requires a tremendous amount of self-discipline and focus. If we focus on the little things that helps us improve each and everyday in the classroom, on the mat and in life, then we will have a very successful program."
