Maxwell, Morales Highlight Bears’ NEWA Postseason Award Winners

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior 165-pounder Fox Maxwell and junior 184-pounder Edwin Morales were named as second team selections on the 2021-2022 All-New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Team as the NEWA season awards were announced.

A native of Winchester, Massachusetts, Maxwell went 28-10 (.737) with a pair of pins, 25 takedowns and 26 escapes in 2021-2022, and shattered his own school record with 148 near fall points. Maxwell garnered All-Northeast Region honors for the third straight season as he placed third at the regional championships competing at 165 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships. He went 1-2 at the national championship meet.

Morales went 20-6 (.769) this season with four pins, 58 near fall points, 25 escapes, seven reversals and a team-leading 43 takedowns. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native placed third out of the 184-pound weight class at the Division III Northeast Regional Championships to earn All-New England honors and qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships for the second consecutive season. Morales went 1-2 at the national championship meet with one pin.

Junior 125-pounder Wilson Gomes was named as honorable mention selection on the All-NEWA Team.

Gomes posted a record of 24-10 (.706) during the 2021-2022 campaign with a team-best 11 pins to go along with 30 takedowns, 75 near fall points, 11 reversals and 22 escapes. The Fogo, Cape Verde product placed seventh at the Northeast Regional competing out of the 125-pound weight class to earn All-Northeast Region honors for the first time in his career.

Maxwell wraps up his four-year BSU career with an overall record of 85-36 (.702) with nine pins, 111 takedowns, 116 escapes and a school-record 318 near fall points. He ranks tenth all-time in program history with his 85 wins.

Morales is 49-10 (.831) over his first two seasons at Bridgewater State with 13 pins, 106 takedowns, 116 near fall points, ten reversals and 54 escapes. He currently ranks second in BSU wrestling history with a .831 career winning percentage.

Gomes has produced an overall mark of 52-46 (.531) in three seasons in a BSU singlet with 23 pins, 101 takedowns, 137 near fall points, 27 reversals and 111 escapes.
