Morales Highlight Bears’ NEWA Postseason Award Winners

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University sophomore 184-pounder Edwin Morales was named as a second team selection on the 2019-2020 All-New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Team as the NEWA season awards were announced today.

Morales went 29-4 (.879) in his first season as a Bear with nine pins, 64 takedowns, 58 near fall points and 29 escapes. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native placed second out of the 184-pound weight class at the Division III Northeast Regional Championships to earn All-New England honors and qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships.

Senior 197-pounder Henry Oberlander, junior 165-pounder Fox Maxwell and sophomore heavyweight Ryan Higgins were each named as honorable mention selections on the All-NEWA Team.

Oberlander posted a record of 27-11 (.711) during his senior campaign with five pins, 34 near fall points, 38 escapes and a team-best 66 takedowns. The Mansfield, Massachusetts product placed seventh at the Northeast Regionals competing out of the 197-pound weight class to earn All-Northeast Region honors for the second time in his career.

A native of Winchester, Massachusetts, Maxwell went 31-18 (.633) with five pins, 42 takedowns and 28 escapes in 2019-2020, and shattered the school record with 120 near fall points. He also tied for 12th all of Division III with eight technical falls. Maxwell garnered All-Northeast Region honors for the second straight season as he placed fourth at the regional championships competing at 165.

Higgins, who hails from Billerica, Massachusetts, finished 31-7 (.816) on the mat this season with a team-leading 16 pins to go along with 56 takedowns, 32 near fall points and 22 escapes. Higgins placed fifth in the heavyweight class at the regionals to garner All-Northeast Region honors for the second straight season.

Oberlander and junior Caleb Lamarre (Brockton, Mass.) were each selected to the All-NEWA Academic Team. To be eligible for All-NEWA Academic Team honors, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average and be nominated by their head coach. Oberlander and Lamarre are both majoring in psychology.
