Wrestling Places 10th at NEWA Futures Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team finished in tenth place at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England University on Saturday.

The Bears recorded 21 points as 15 teams were represented at the tournament.

Freshman Kevin Carlucci (Franklin, Mass.) went 3-2 competing out of the 157-pound weight class. After dropping his first bout of the day, Carlucci recorded a 16-0 technical fall victory over Zach Palizza of Springfield College and then earned a 5-4 decision over John Nieroda of Roger Williams University. Following a pin (6:00) of Springfield's George Glaropoulos, Carlucci dropped a 9-5 decision to Tyson Cram of the University of Southern Maine in the consolation quarterfinals.

Junior Wilfredo David (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Jacob Nordin (Brockton, Mass.) also registered multiple wins for the Bears as they both wrestled out of the 165-pound weight class.

David posted a 10-9 decision against Roger Williams' Ryan Grebe and pinned (2:02) Dimitrios Tartsinis of host Western New England in his first two bouts of the day. David lost by tech. fall (18-3) to Gabriel Degraffinreed of Johnson & Wales University in the semifinals and was pinned (1:08) by Grebe in the consolation semifinals.

Nordin opened the day with a 14-4 major decision victory over Alexander Hom of Rhode Island College. Following a second round setback, Nordin pinned (1:32) Nick Stehl of Norwich University to advance to the consolation quarterfinals where he was pinned (2:03) by Grebe.

Next weekend, the BSU wrestling team will compete at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by Rhode Island College.
