Wrestling Sweeps Trinity Quad

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team swept a quad meet hosted by Trinity College on Friday evening.

The Bears (7-9) edged Rhode Island College, 23-20, in the opening match of the evening and followed that up with a 41-9 victory over AIC. Bridgewater completed the sweep with a 42-6 win against host Trinity.

Senior 197-pounder Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.), junior 165-pounder Fox Maxwell (Winchester), sophomore 125-pounder Wilson Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde), sophomore heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore 184-pounder Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) all went 3-0 on the day.

Oberlander earned a 5-3 overtime win over Daniel Sblendorio of RIC, pinned Raul Martinez of AIC (3:34), and recorded a medical forfeit victory against Trinity. Sblendorio entered the day ranked fourth in New England.

Oberlander improves to 24-9 (.727) on the season with five pins.

Maxwell posted a 16-0 tech. fall over RIC's Alexander Hom, decisioned Ahmad Sharif of AIC, 7-2, and edged Trinity's Lucas Kaminski, 7-3. Maxwell improves to 27-16 (.628) on the 2019-2020 campaign as he is tied for the team lead in wins.

Gomes decision Julien Vivas of RIC, 10-3, pinned AIC's Jacob Marselli (1:29), and won by forfeit against Trinity. Gomes is now 16-15 (.516) on the year with seven pins.

Higgins pinned each of his first two opponents, RIC's Travis Manick (5:38) and Alphonse Ferrentino of AIC (4:19). He wrapped up the evening with a 4-2 decision over Trinity's John O'Brien. O'Brien came into the meet ranked sixth in New England.

Higgins improves to 27-5 (.844) on the season with a team-best 15 pins.

Morales pinned Nathaniel Stemple of RIC (1:31) and blanked AIC's Isaiah Collins, 9-0. He also picked up a win by forfeit against Trinity. Morales is now 26-3 (.897) on the season with eight pins.

Junior Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) went 1-2 on the evening competing out of the 157-pound weight class including a victory over Trinity's Kevin Lyskawa. Winn stunned the #2 ranked wrestler in New England, 4-3. He also dropped a tough 6-4 decision to #4-ranked Samuel Lindblom of RIC.

In upcoming action, several members of the BSU wrestling team will compete at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures Tournament hosted by Western New England University on Saturday, February 22nd.
