Wrestling Drops Three Matches at Coast Guard Quad

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team dropped three matches at a quad hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday at Billard Hall.

The Bears (4-9) suffered a pair of setbacks to nationally ranked teams as they lost to #9 New York University, 40-12, and #17 Coast Guard, 49-0. In their final match, the Bears dropped a 37-12 decision to WPI.

Sophomore 184-pounder Edwin Morales (Philadelphia, Pa.) went 1-1 on the day with a win by fall (0:44) over Gabriel Rodrigues of NYU. Morales dropped a 12-4 major decision to #4 ranked Paul Detwiler of Coast Guard.

Sophomore heavyweight Ryan Higgins (Billerica, Mass.) also went 1-1 at the quad with a forfeit victory in the match with NYU. Higgins was injured in the first period against #3 ranked Patrick Irwin of Coast Guard.

Sophomore heavyweight Joseph Munro (Norwood, Mass.) picked up an overtime win in his only match of the day, a 3-1 sudden victory decision against WPI's Niko Diakides.

Senior 197-pounder Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.) went 1-2 on the afternoon with a 7-4 decision over Tyler Riggs of WPI. Oberlander lost by decision, 10-3, to #10 ranked Jonathan Wagner of Coast Guard, and by technical fall to NYU's Jack La Corte. La Corte is listed as a contender in the most recent d3wrestle.com individual rankings.

The Bears are off until Friday (Feb. 14) when they travel to Trinity College for a wrestling quad featuring the host Bantams as well as AIC and Rhode Island College.
