Wrestling Posts 1-2 Mark at NEWA-Metro Duals

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team went 1-2 at the NEWA-Metro Duals on Saturday at the Tinsley Center.

The Bears (4-7) dropped a 39-12 decision to Centenary University before posting a 25-17 victory over Hunter College. Bridgewater ended the day with a 47-0 setback to The College of New Jersey.

Junior Andrew Valdina (Dracut, Mass.) and senior Eric Kerr (Lynnfield, Mass.) both went 2-0 on the afternoon while sophomore Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.) finished 2-1.

Competing out of the 133-pound weight class, Valdina edged his opponent from Centenary, 4-2, and earned an 11-6 decision in the Bears win over Hunter.

The 157 pound Kerr recorded a first period (1:30) pin against Centenary and battled to a tough 9-8 victory over his opponent from Hunter. Kerr is now 17-7 on the season.

Oberlander, competing at 184, won 6-4 in overtime in the loss to Centenary and cruised to a 17-6 major decision triumph against Hunter. Oberlander is now 18-8 on the year.

Centenary and TCNJ both went 3-0 on the day as the three Metro teams finished 6-3 overall.

Prior to the match, the Bears honored seniors Kerr, Tom Arseneault (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Declan Heaslip (Dedham, Mass.). Arseneault won his only bout of the day, a 7-2 decision against Hunter, as he improved to 3-1 on the season.

The BSU wrestling team is off until next Saturday when the Bears travel to WPI for a quad meet.
