Wrestling Places Ninth at RWU Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team placed ninth (37 pts.) at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday.

Freshmen Wilfredo David (Chicopee, Mass.) and Devin Winn (Brockton, Mass.) finished with three wins apiece at the tournament, while sophomores Declan Heaslip (Dedham, Mass.) and Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.), and senior Bobby Gasdia (Rockland, Mass.) each recorded two wins.

Competing out of the 184-pound weight class, Oberlander opened the day with a 13-4 major decision victory over  (13-4) over Muhlenberg's Wasson Cam and followed that up with a win by fall against Brett Leonard of Roger Williams. Oberlander lost to Derek Beitz of Messiah in the semifinals  and Johnson & Wales' Peyton Blauvelt in the consolation semifinals, both by pin.

David bounced back from an opening round setback to win three straight bouts and post a 3-2 record at 174. He earned a 4-3 decision over Jesse Weiner of LIU Post before recording back-to-back pins against Southern Maine's  Justin Stacy and Michael Fernandes of host Roger Williams. David dropped a 7-4 decision to Johnson & Wales' Seon Bowker in the consolation quarterfinals.

Winn also rebounded from an opening round loss to win three consecutive matches and finish the day with a 3-2 mark at 149. He earned a medical forfeit victory and then pinned Ben Peck of Muhlenberg before posting a 3-2 overtime decision against Ben Forsman of Norwich. Winn dropped a 9-1 major decision to Johnson & Wales' Jordan Robinson in the consolation quarterfinals.

Heaslip went 2-2 in the 165-pound bracket including a win by fall against Wesleyan's Aaron Cranston and a 5-4 decision over Cole Clement of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). Heaslip lost by tech. fall (18-3) to Travis Ahrens of USMMA in the consolation round.

The 184-pound Gasdia also finished with a 2-2 record including a pin against Coast Guard's Jessup Pawelczyk as well as a forfeit win. Gasdia was pinned by Leonard in the consolation round.

The Bears were pinned 18 times and suffered six tech. falls at the highly competitive tournament. Bridgewater also recorded seven wins by fall. The BSU lineup, featuring 18 wrestlers, consisted of ten freshman and four sophomores.

Johnson & Wales won the team title with 171 points. Messiah was a close second with 169.5 points. Roger Williams (132.5 pts.) rounded out the top three.

The season continues for the BSU wrestling team next Saturday when the Bears compete at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
