Wrestling Places 11th at RWU Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Bridgewater State University wrestling team placed 11th at the Roger Williams Invitational held on Saturday at the Campus Recreation Center.

Sophomore Andrew Valdina (Dracut, Mass.), senior Anthony Cote (Danbury, Conn.) and sophomore Tom Arseneault (Lynnfield, Mass.) were the top three scoring wrestlers for the Bears as the trio combined for 28.5 out of the team's 47.5 points.

Valdina went 4-2 on the day to finish in fourth place out of the 125-pound weight class and earn 13.5 points. Valdina posted a consolation semifinal round pin (3:00) over Nick Barbaria of host Roger Williams, before bowing to Bobby Jordan of Johnson & Wales University in the third place match.

Cote finished in sixth place and recorded 8.5 team points competing at 165. He won his first two bouts by technical fall and decision before dropping the next three including a 6-3 semifinal round setback to Nick Remke of Coast Guard.

Arseneault finished 4-3 out of the heavyweight class to record 6.5 points. He bounced back from a tough 2-1 opening round loss to post four straight wins by decision in the consolation bracket. Arseneault dropped a 3-1 decision to Jonah Aurelio of Johnson & Wales in the consolation semifinals, followed by a 2-0 setback to Victor Raigoza Merchant Marine in the fifth-place match.

Host Roger Williams captured the team title with 150.5 points. Johnson & Wales was second with 135 points, while York College rounded out the top three with 127 points.

The Bears are off until next Saturday when they compete at the Doug Parker Invitational hosted by Springfield College.
