Wrestling Cruises to 40-6 Win over New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team picked up its first dual meet victory of the season as the Bears downed New England College, 40-6, on Wednesday evening at Bridges Gymnasium in Henniker, New Hampshire.

The match marked the first dual meet for the host Pilgrims who are in their inaugural season. Bridgewater State improves to 1-2 on the young season, while NEC falls to 0-1.

The match started at the heavyweight class and the Bears trailed 6-0 two bouts in. A 16-1 technical fall victory at 133 by freshman Brett Layton (New Bedford, Mass.) followed by back-to-back forfeit wins at 141 and 149 put Bridgewater on top 17-6.

Freshman Logan Larsen (Chanhassen, Minn.) earned a 14-6 major decision triumph at 157, and sophomore Andrew Szilagyi (Levittown, N.Y.) posted a 4-1 decision at 165 to extend the Bears' advantage to 24-6.

Freshman 174-pounder Eric Lamore (Wethersfield, Conn.) set a new BSU record for fastest pin as he pinned his opponent in just ten seconds. Lamore eclipsed the previous mark of 13 seconds set by Andy Cook back in 2001 against Scranton.

A 14-3 major decision win by senior Anthony Cote (Danbury, Conn.) at 184, followed by a first period (0:54) pin by freshman Henry Oberlander (Mansfield, Mass.) at 197 accounted for the final score of 40-6.

Freshmen Jason Sulinski (Dedham, Mass.) and Mark Kagiwada (Smithtown, N.Y.) picked up the Bears' two forfeit victories at 141 and 149, respectively.

Layton, Larsen, Lamore, Oberlander, Sulinski and Kagiwada all earned their first collegiate victories.

The Bears will return to the mat on Saturday when they travel to Bristol, Rhode Island for the Roger Williams Invitational.
