Wrestling Posts 1-1 Mark at Plymouth State Tri-Match

PLYMOUTH, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team split a tri-match hosted by Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (1-5) dropped a 48-0 decision to New York University before posting a 30-21 win over host Plymouth State. The win marked the first collegiate dual meet victory for BSU first-year skipper Frank Cammisa.

In the victory over the Panthers, BSU won each of the first five bouts by virtue of four pins and a forfeit victory to open up a 30-0 lead.  Seniors Andrew Gauthier (Lowell, Mass.) and Brett Reed (Marshfield, Mass.), sophomore Paul Sughrue (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Matthew Jiampetti (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) all recorded wins by fall.  Gauthier at the 125-pound weight class, Reed at 133, Sughrue at 149 and Jiampetti at 157.  Freshman Eric Kerr (Lynnfield, Mass.) picked up the win by forfeit at 141.

The host Panthers won the final five bouts to close out the scoring.  A pair of decisions at 165 and heavyweight, a major decision victory at 174, a forfeit at 184 and a 17-1 technical fall triumph at 197 accounted for PSU's 21 points.

Sughrue also dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Brandon Jones at 141 in the setback to NYU. Jones is currently ranked fourth in all of Division III in the weight class and finished third at the NCAA Division III Championships last season. Sughrue was leading in the match entering the final minute.

Bridgewater State returns to the mat on Sunday, January 25th (10:00 AM) when the Bears compete at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Tournament hosted by Springfield College.
