Wrestling Drops Pair of Matches at Western New England Tri-Match

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University wrestling team dropped a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted by Western New England University on Sunday.

The Bears lost to Pilgrim Wrestling League (PWL) rival University of Southern Maine, 24-18, and host Western New England, 44-12.

The Bears slip to 0-4 in dual meets on the season and 0-3 in the PWL.

In their opening match against Southern Maine, the Bears jumped out to a 9-0 lead thanks to a forfeit win by senior Brett Reed (Mansfield, Mass.) at 133 and a 7-3 decision by senior Andrew Gauthier (Lowell, Mass.) at 141. Gauthier moved up two weight classes to post the win.

After the Huskies pulled ahead 13-9 with three consecutive wins, junior Ryan Cassidy (Billerica, Mass.) reclaimed the lead for the Bears, 15-13, with a pin (2:12) at 174. However, a pin at 184 and a tech. fall victory at 197 clinched the match win for Southern Maine. Sophomore Daniel Quinn (Quincy, Mass.) capped off the scoring with a 2-0 decision at heavyweight.

Cassidy and Quinn picked up forfeit wins at 174 and heavyweight, respectively, in the 44-12 setback to the host Golden Bears.

BSU returns to the mat on Saturday as the Bears compete at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Invitational.
