McDonough Leads Women's Lacrosse to 18-8 Win over Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore attack Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) scored a career-high eight goals and added a pair of assists to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 victory over Western New England University on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears improve to 6-2 with their third straight win, while the host Golden Bears fall to 1-7.

Senior attack Gabby Reinold (Braintree, Mass.) contributed three goals and an assist for the visitors, while junior attack Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) potted three goals.

After an evenly played first half, Bridgewater dominated play in the final stanza as the Bears outscored the Golden Bears 12-2 over the final 30 minutes.

With the score knotted at 6-6, back-to-back goals by Reinold and senior midfielder Haley Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) to open the second half gave Bridgewater a two-goal advantage. After Western New England cut the deficit to one, the Bears reeled off seven straight goals to put the game out of reach. McDonough found the back of the net four times during the seven-goal run, while Ettridge scored twice.

Bridgewater finished with a 36-19 shot advantage for the game, including a decided 20-9 edge in the second half. The Bears also dominated the draw, 20-8, with McDonough and junior defender Lisa Moynihan (Norwood, Mass.) leading all players with seven apiece. Moynihan also registered a game-high six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) made four saves to record her sixth win of the season.

Sophomore attack Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.) and freshman attack Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.) scored two goals each for Western New England. Junior defender Rebecca Allen (Franklin, Mass.) collected three ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers.

In upcoming action, the Bears open Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to MCLA for a one o'clock game with the Trailblazers.
