McDonough Leads Women's Lacrosse to 19-10 Win over Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman attack Victoria McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) tallied a career-high seven goals and ten points to lead the visiting Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 19-12 win over Worcester State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

The Bears improve to 7-6 on the season and 3-0 in the MASCAC, while the host Lancers slide to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) chipped in with five goals and a pair of assists for a career-high seven points for the Bears, while senior midfielder Alex Lynch (Plainville, Mass.) potted four goals.

The first half consisted of a back-and-forth battle between the two teams until the last minute of play when Ettridge and McDonough notched back-to-back goals giving the Bears an 8-6 advantage over the Lancers heading into halftime.

Two quick tallies by Lynch and senior attack Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) within the first three minutes of the second half made it a four-goal game (10-6). Worcester State answered back as Alaina Martin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) cut the deficit to three, but consecutive markers by McDonough gave the Bears a 12-7 advantage with 23:42 remaining.

The Lancers narrowed the gap to 12-10 as freshman midfielder Sarah Cohan (Lowell, Mass.), junior attack Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.), and junior midfielder Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.) each found the back of the net.

Ettridge responded with back-to-back goals to push the BSU lead back to four. Martin and sophomore attack Kylie Farrell (Sutton, Mass.) got two back for the hosts to make it a 14-12 game with just under 14 minutes left to play. The Lancers, however, would not score again.

Bridgewater closed out the game with a 5-0 run as Renauld, Ettridge, McDonough (twice) and Lynch all scored to account for the final tally of 19-12. Renauld moved into fifth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list with her 297th career point (206 G, 91 A).

Vecchiarelli finished with five goals, while senior midfielder Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.) registered a game-high six assists to pace the Lancers. Martin also chipped in four points with three goals and an assist.

Bridgewater held the advantage in both shots (35-27) and ground balls (12-8), while Worcester finished with a 19-14 edge in draw controls. The Bears went 2-for-5 in free position attempts, while the Lancers converted just 1 of 5 attempts on the free position.

BSU senior goaltender Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) notched 13 saves to record her sixth win of the season and 36th of her career. Worcester senior netminder Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.) turned aside nine shots in the setback.

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Tuesday evening. The Bears travel to Mass. Maritime Academy for a seven o'clock game with the Buccaneer, while the Lancers head to MCLA for a six o'clock matchup with the Trailblazers.
