Women's Lacrosse Falls to Babson in Season Opener, 14-3

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College women's lacrosse team opened the 2017 campaign with a 14-3 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Saturday at MacDowell Field.

Ten different players scored for the host Beavers (1-0) who led 6-1 at the intermission and tallied the first six goals of the second half to put the game well out of reach.

Senior midfielder Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) paced Babson with three goals, while junior attack Lyndsay Giroux (Westwood, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) also found the back of the new twice for the Beavers.

Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) led the way for the Bridgewater State with two goals and an assist. Senior attack Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) also scored for the Bears (0-1).

The Beavers outshot the Bears by a decided margin of 29-13. Babson also held a slight 11-9 edge in draw controls with junior midfielder Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) leading all players with five and McKenna adding three.

Senior goaltender Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) picked up the win between the pipes for Babson as she split the game with freshman netminder Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.). Burger and Phelan recorded three saves apiece.

Freshman keeper Hayley Barner (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside 12 shots in her collegiate debut for the Bears.

BSU sophomore defender Lisa Moynihan (Norwood, Mass.) finished with a game-high six groundballs and senior defender Gaelin Reall (Providence, R.I.) recorded a game-best four caused turnovers. Renauld and senior defender Taylor Brown (Commack, N.Y.) each recorded three draw controls.

Both teams are off until next Saturday. The Bears travel to Mount Holyoke College for a noontime game with the Lyons, while the Beavers head to Skidmore College to take on the Thoroughbreds at 2:00 PM.
