Women's Lacrosse Posts 19-9 Senior Day Win over Salem State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass – Senior attack Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) potted a career-high eight goals to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 19-9 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over visiting Salem State University on Senior Day at Swenson Field.

The host Bears improve to 8-5 on the season and 4-1 in the MASCAC, while the Vikings fall to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

 Yowell also added an assist as she finished with a game-best nine points. Junior attack Alex King (North Weymouth, Mass.) contributed seven points on two goals and a career high five assists.

BSU senior midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with four goals and an assist to go along with game-high totals of ten draw controls, six ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Junior goaltender Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) recorded 12 saves including the 400th of her career.

The Bears scored the first four goals of the game and held an 8-3 lead at the break. Yowell scored four goals in the first half while Geary notched a pair.

Senior midfielder Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) scored for the Vikings to open the second half and cut the deficit to 8-4. That, however, would be as close as Salem would get. Back-to-back goals by freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) and Geary swung the momentum back in favor of the Bears.

Bridgewater would get up by as many as ten goals on three different occasions in the second half including the final score of 19-9.

The Bears held a 39-26 shot advantage as well as a decided 24-5 edge in draw controls.

Ettridge chipped in three goals and an assist for Bridgewater State, and junior midfielder Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) added three assists. Ettridge also corralled five ground balls, while Renauld recorded five draws.

Riley paced the Vikings with three goals and an assist. Senior attack Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.) dished out three assists. Senior goaltender Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) turned aside 14 shots in the setback.

Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Yowell, Geary, Amanda Liebetruth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Mariah McKenna (Plymouth, Mass.).

The MASCAC schedule continues for both teams on Wednesday. The Bears travel to Framingham State University to take on the Rams at 4:30, while the Vikings entertain Westfield State University at six.

Notes: Geary moved into third place on the Bears' all-time goal scoring list as she now has 210 for her career....Geary also increased her career draw control total to 559. Jessica Scannapieco, who played for Western New England University from 2012 to 2015, is the all-time NCAA Division III leader with 573 draws....Forman became just the third goaltender in BSU women's lacrosse history to reach the 400-save milestone, joining Jo-Ellen Murgo (512 saves) and Meghan Griffin (476 saves)....King moved into seventh place on the Bears' all-time assist list with her 69th career helper.
