Women's Lacrosse Soars Past Seahawks, 18-5

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team dominated play from start to finish as the visiting Bears cruised to an 18-5 victory over Salve Regina University on Friday night.

The Bears remain unbeaten on the young season as they improve to 4-0. The host Seahawks fall to 1-4 with the loss.

Senior midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) had a terrific all-around game for the Bears as she filled the stat sheet with four goals, eight ground balls and six draw controls.

Junior attack Alex King (North Weymouth, Mass.) led all scorers with five goals and two assist for seven points, while junior midfielder Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) tallied three goals and three assists to go along with three ground balls and three draws.

Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ettridge (Marshfield, Mass.) notched a goal and a pair of assists, and senior attack Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) checked in with three goals and three ground balls.

Bridgewater scored the first eight goals of the contest and never looked back. The Bears got on the board just 25 seconds into the game when Renauld found King in front for her first goal of the night. The Bears would keep scoring as King had a hat-trick just 4:09 into the contest.

The three goals from King as well as two each by Geary and Renauld helped the visitors jump out to the 8-0 advantage with 18:35 left to play in the first half. The Bears would go on to take a 9-3 lead into the intermission.

A pair of goals by Yowell and one each from King and freshman defender Kerrin O'Leary (Millbury, Mass.) increased the BSU lead to 13-3 less than seven minutes into the final stanza. For O'Leary, the scoring strike marked the first of her collegiate career.

Following back-to-back goals by Seahawk junior attack Courtney Moulton (Merrimack, N.H.), Bridgewater closed out the game with five unanswered goals (by five different goal scorers) to account for the final tally of 18-5.

The visitors held a 39-15 shot advantage as well as the edge in draw controls (14-11) and ground balls (23-19).

BSU junior netminder Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) turned aside ten shots as she recorded her fourth win of the season. With her ten saves, Forman became the sixth player in program history to reach the 300-save milestone. She now has 307 saves in three seasons with the Bears.

The game marked the 18th meeting between the two teams as the Bears now own a 16-2 record all-time versus the Seahawks.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Lasell College for a four o'clock game with the Lasers. The Seahawks are off until Tuesday, March 29th when they entertain the Golden Bears of Western New England University at 7:00 PM.

Notes: Forman is now tied for third (along with Katie Weber) in program history in career wins with 23....With her four goals, Renauld increased her career total to 140 as she moved into a tie for tenth place (along with former teammate Riley Cachelin) on the Bears' all-time goal scoring list.
