Marissa Yowell Named MASCAC Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior attack Marissa Yowell has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week.

A native of Ashland, Massachusetts, Yowell tallied 13 goals and five assists for 18 points during the Bears' three-game MASCAC Tournament championship run. She also added ten ground balls and a pair of controlled draws.

Yowell notched five goals, an assist, five ground balls, two draws and a caused turnover in the Bears’ 22-8 quarterfinal round triumph over Salem State. She added seven goals, an assist and three ground balls in a 19-11 semifinal win over Fitchburg State, and capped off the tournament with a goal and three assists to go along with two ground balls in a 13-12 championship game victory in overtime against Westfield State.

Through 20 games in her first season playing collegiate women’s lacrosse, Yowell has recorded 54 goals and 11 assists for 65 points in addition to 35 ground balls, 11 draws and 12 caused turnovers.  She is tied for fourth in the MASCAC in goals and ranks tenth in scoring.

By virtue of the MASCAC Tournament title, the BSU women's lacrosse team earned the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bears, who will be making the program's sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh overall, will travel to Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon to take on Saint Joseph's College of Maine in first round action. Game time is slated for 1:00 PM.
