Women's Lacrosse Posts 21-9 MASCAC Win over Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Junior Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) netted five goals and an assist for six points to lead Bridgewater State to a 21-9 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

The visiting Bears (5-5, 1-1 MASCAC) jumped out to an early 3-2 lead before scoring eight of nine goals over a 17-and-a-half minute stretch en route to a 13-4 advantage at the break.

Bridgewater State netted seven of the opening eight markers after intermission, including a hat trick by sophomore Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.), to take its largest lead of the day with just over 10 minutes to play.

Junior Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) tallied four times and added a pair of helpers to join Yowell with six points for the winners, who also received a pair of goals and five assists from senior Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) to go with a hat trick and four helpers off the stick of sophomore Melissa Renaud (Framingham, Mass.).

King finished with four goals and an assist in the triumph for the Bears, who also received a marker and helper from sophomore Alex Lynch (Plainville, Mass.) as well as single tallies off the sticks of senior Katharine Trahan (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Rachel McCormack (Plymouth, Mass.).

Freshman Brianna Pingree (Mashpee, Mass.) scored a career-high five goals in the setback for the host Buccaneers (4-3, 1-1 MASCAC), who also received two tallies each from junior Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.). Sophomores Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) and Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) added assists for Massachusetts Maritime, which saw its three-match winning streak come to an end.

Sophomore Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with four first half saves for Bridgewater State, which also received three second half stops from junior Chandler Ross(Wrentham, Mass.).

Freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) made eight first half saves in suffering the setback in net for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received five stops from senior Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.) over the final 30 minutes of play.

The Bears outshot the Buccaneers by a 40-22 margin and held a 20-12 advantage in draw controls for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Westfield, Mass. next Friday evening to take on Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State hosts Plymouth State in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening in Bridgewater, Mass. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: With her five assists, Cachelin increased her career total to 115 as she moved past Courtney Lennon (111 pts.) into third place on the Bears' all-time assist list....Geary now has 122 goals on the season as she is tenth all-time at BSU. Geary passed Kristin White (119 goals) and Corinne Baker (120 goals) on the Bears' all-time goal scoring list.
