Women's Lacrosse Falls to Western New England, 21-9

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting Western New England University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 21-9 victory over Bridgewater State University on Thursday night at Swenson Field.

The Golden Bears improve to 9-1 on the season as they extend their winning streak to nine games. The host Bears slip to 4-5 with the setback.

Senior midfielder Sarah Stevens (Stratford, Conn.) notched seven goals and seven assists to lead Western New England, while junior attack Taylor Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) tallied four goals and five assists. Senior midfielder Jessica Scannapieco (Blue Bell, Pa.) added a four goals and a helper as the trio combined for 15 goals and 13 assists.

Senior attack Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) paced the Bears with three goals and three assists, while junior attack Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) and junior midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) recorded two goals apiece.

Western New England used a 10-0 first half run to take a 12-3 lead into the intermission. Scialdone and Stevens netted three goals apiece during the run.

After the teams exchanged goals to open the second half, the Bears reeled off four straight markers to cut the deficit to 13-8 with 23:30 remaining. Geary potted a pair to highlight the surge.

Following a timeout, back-to-back tallies from Stevens and Scannapieco extended the visitors lead to 15-8.  The Golden Bears would outscore the Bears 8-1 over the final 23 minutes to win going away.

Western New England held a 36-26 shot advantage for the game as well as a 21-11 edge in draw controls. Stevens and Scannapieco registered eight draws apiece, while Geary led the Bridgewater State with six.

Senior netminder Emily Castleman (Wilbraham, Mass.) made six saves to post her ninth win of the season between the pipes for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) and junior Chandler Ross (Wrentham, Mass.) combined to record nine saves for the hosts.

The Bears travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock MASCAC game with the Buccaneers.  The Golden Bears are off until next Wednesday when they entertain Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Salve Regina University at 4:00 PM.
