Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Eastern Connecticut, 11-10

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior attack Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) tallied a goal and four assists as the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team held on for an 11-10 victory over visiting Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.

The host Bears even their record at 3-3 with the win, while the Warriors slip to 2-6.

Cachelin's first assist of the evening marked the 100th of her career as she became just the fourth player in program history to achieve the milestone.

Sophomore attack Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) chipped in with three goals for BSU, while sophomore midfielder Paige Schneider (East Lyme , Conn.) paced Eastern with four goals and a helper.

Bridgewater held a 6-3 lead at the break on the strength of a pair of goals from junior midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) and two by freshman defender Brooke Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.). With the game knotted at 2-2 midway through the period, the Bears outscored the Warriors 4-1 over the final 12 minutes of the stanza with Buckner tallying back-to-back strikes to cap off the run.

After Schneider opened the second half scoring, a pair of goals by Renauld sandwiched around a Katharine Trahan (Burlington, Mass.) tally staked the Bears to a 9-4 lead with 23:59 remaining. Schneider stopped the bleeding with her fourth goal of the game, but sophomore attack Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.) answered for BSU less than a minute later to push the advantage back to five (10-5).

Sophomore attack Bianca Jacques (Berlin, Conn.) and Cachelin exchanged goals as the Bears' lead remained at five (11-6) with 17:37 showing on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back strikes by junior attack Tess Mraz (Fairfield, Conn.), including a shorthanded tally, started a four-goal uprising for the Warriors. Sophomore midfielder Caroline Regan (Niantic, Conn.) scored on the player advantage and then found the back of the net again just over four minutes later to cap off the rally and pull Eastern to within one (11-10) with 2:53 left to play.

Geary, however, won the ensuing draw and Bridgewater maintained possession over the final 173 seconds to run out the clock as the Bears hung on for the win. ECSU was whistled for seven fouls during that span as the Warriors aggressively attempted to force a turnover but were unsuccessful.

Shots favored the Bears, 27-24.  BSU also held an 11-8 advantage in ground balls as well as a 14-9 edge in draw controls. Bridgewater converted just 3 of 9 free position attempts while Eastern went 0-for-4. The two teams combined for 56 fouls in the contest as well as six yellow cards.

Geary finished with a pair of goals on the day as well as a season-high ten draws to go along with a pair of caused turnovers. Buckner recorded a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover in addition to her two goals, while King notched two goals and an assist.

Senior attack Meg Eremita (South Windsor, Conn.) added four assists for the visitors while Jacques, Mraz and Regan finished with two goals apiece. Sophomore defender Devyne Doran (South Kingstown, R.I.) paced the Warriors defensively with four draws, three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Junior netminder Chandler Ross (Wrentham, Mass.), making her first start of the season between the pipes for the Bears, made five saves to record the win. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Emmerson (Colchester, Conn.) turned aside 13 shots in the setback for the Warriors.

Both teams open up conference play on Saturday. The Bears entertain Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Fitchburg State University at 10:00 AM, while the Warriors head back on the road to take on Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College at 1:00 PM.

Notes: With her five points (1G, 4A), Cachelin increased her career total to 223 as she moved past Laura Swart ('00-'04) into seventh place on the Bears' all-time scoring list....Cachelin also tied Corinne Baker ('03-'06) for ninth place on the Bears' career goal scoring list as she now has 120 goals to her credit.
