Women's Lacrosse Downs Mass. Maritime, 20-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team posted a 20-1 victory over visiting Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Wednesday night at Swenson Field.

The host Bears improve to 10-5 on the season and remain unbeaten in MASCAC play with a 4-0 conference mark.  The Buccaneers slip to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in the MASCAC.

Eleven different players scored for Bridgewater State while 12 recorded at least one point.

Junior attacker Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) led all players with six points as she tallied a goal and matched her career-high with five assists.  Freshman midfielder Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) scored a game-best four goals to go along with an assist and seven ground balls, while senior midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with three goals, an assist, four ground balls, four draws and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) added three goals and an assist for the Bears, while freshman midfielder Alex Lynch (Plainville, Mass.) scored two goals and assisted on another.  Senior attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and a pair of assists, while freshman midfielder Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.) dished out three assists.

BSU freshman defender Taylor Brown (Commack, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate goal with 19:26 remaining in the first half which, at the time, gave the Bears a 7-0 lead.  Later in the period, Brown capped off the first half scoring with her second marker of the night as Bridgewater led 13-0 at the break.

Junior defender Katharine Trahan (Burlington, Mass.), freshman attack Abbie Pustis (Andover, Mass.) and freshman defenders Gaelin Reall (Providence, R.I.) and Makaila Lombardy (Attleboro, Mass.) also scored for the Bears.

Senior attack Hillary Doucette (Manchester, Mass.) found the back of the net for the Mass. Maritime roughly eight minutes into the second half to avoid the shutout.

Bridgewater held a 14-9 advantage in controlled draws as well as a 25-16 edge in ground balls.  The Bears also outshot the Buccaneers by a decided margin of 31-10.

Sophomore netminder Chandler Ross (Wrentham, Mass.) worked the first half between the pipes for the hosts to record her fourth win of the season.  Ross (4-2) made three saves and did not allow a goal.  Sophomore Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) turned aside nine shots in the setback for the Buccaneers.

In upcoming action, the Bears entertain Westfield State University on Thursday night at seven, while the Buccaneers host Westfield on Saturday at one in their regular season finale.

Notes: Cachelin moved into tenth place on the Bears' all-time scoring list as she now has 179 points (105 G, 74 A) in three seasons at Bridgewater State....Clancy moved into eighth place among the Bears' all-time assist leaders as she now has 60 career helpers in four seasons at BSU.
