Women's Lacrosse Posts 20-9 Non-Conference Win over UMass Dartmouth

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team used a 7-0 first half run to break open a one-goal game as the Bears cruised to a 20-9 non-conference win over visiting UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 5-3 with their third straight win, while the Corsairs slip to 1-6.  UMass has dropped six in a row after winning its season opener.

Six different players scored for Bridgewater State with freshman Abbie Pustis (Andover, Mass.) leading the way with a career-high five goals to go along with an assist.  Senior Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) each finished with four goals and three assists.   Clancy added three ground balls and a game-high eight draw controls, while Renauld notched four ground balls.

Also filling the scoresheet for Bridgewater State were junior Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) and freshman Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.).  Cachelin registered three goals and three assists, while Geary notched two goals and three assists to go along with six draws and a game-best five ground balls.  King found the back of the net twice and dished out one assist.

Senior Taylor Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) and sophomore Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) paced the UMD offense with three goals apiece. Kane added a team-best five draws, while Corsano tallied two ground balls and three draws.

Bridgewater potted the first four goals of the game and seemed poised to run away with the victory.  The Corsairs, however, scored six of the next seven goals to take their only lead of the game at 6-5.  Corsano and Kane each scored twice during the run.

The Bears would answer with the 7-0 scoring spree to take control of the game for good.  Six different players scored during the run with Clancy potting a pair of goals.  Bridgewater would take a 12-7 lead into the intermission.

A pair of goals by Renauld followed by one each from Clancy and Pustis to open the second half gave the hosts a commanding 16-7 advantage and they would never look back.

Bridgewater held a 35-13 shot advantage for the game as well as an 18-12 edge in draws.

BSU freshman Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) made two saves to post her third win of the season between the pipes.  Fellow rookie netminder Leah Wilkinson (Northfield, Ct.) faced 35 shots, including 29 on frame, and recorded nine saves in the setback for the Corsairs.

Both teams open conference play on Saturday.  The Bears host Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Fitchburg State University at six, while the Corsairs entertain Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University at four.

Notes: With her six draws, Geary increased her career total to 220.  She is currently 11 shy of Shannon Manning's (2007-10) all-time program mark of 231....The Bear have allowed fewer than ten goals in each of the last four games.
