Women's Lacrosse Posts 17-5 Win Over Salve Regina

MIDDLETOWN, R. I. -- Freshman Melissa Renauld (Framingham, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals as she led the Bridgewater State women's lacrosse team to a 17-5 win over Salve Regina, Thursday afternoon.

The win evens the Bears' record to 3-3 on the year while the Seahawks slip to 3-4 to open the season.

The Bears raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first 10 minutes as four different players scored for Bridgewater State, highlighted by a pair of goals apiece from Renauld and freshman Alex King (Weymouth, Mass.).

Junior Sarah Woods (East Lyme, Conn.) halted the Bears' scoring frenzy with her 21st goal of the season off a quick feed from classmate Gina Tortorici (Deer Park, N.Y.) to cut the lead to 6-1. Renauld then rattled off three-straight goals, the middle one off an assist from junior Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.).

Senior Grace Kelly (Auburn, N.Y.) interrupted the Bears' scoring before sophomore Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) finished out the half with three of her own, the final coming as time expired. The Bears took the 12-2 lead into halftime.

Renauld opened the second with her sixth of the game. Tortorici answered with a pair of goals to cut the lead back down to 13-4, but Cachelin answered with two of her own to push the BSU advantage back to 11 goals at 15-4.

Sophomore Katherine Miele (North Reading, Mass.) scored the Seahawks final goal of the game with 6:23 to play before the Bears finished out the game with goals from senior Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Gaelin Reall (Providence, R.I.) to bring the score to its final, 17-5.

Cachelin (3g, 4a), Geary (4g) and Renauld (6g) all had a hat trick for the Bears while Tortorici led the Seahawks with two goals and an assist.

BSU freshman goaltender Allie Forman (Marblehead, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate win as she made ten save between the pipes.  Senior Josephine O'Reilly (Middletown, R.I.) made 10 saves in the net for the Seahawks.

The Bears held a 15-8 advantage in draw controls with Geary leading the way with a season-high nine.  Geary also finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Bridgewater State returns to action when the Bears travel to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. start. The Seahawks open Commonwealth Coast Conference action at noon on Saturday at home against Gordon.
