Women's Lacrosse Blanks Wheelock, 23-0

BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, MA) tallied nine points, including four goals, and freshman midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, MA) won a staggering 17 draw controls to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 23-0 victory over host Wheelock College this evening at Winsor Field in Boston, MA.

The Bears improve to 13-2 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 3-10.

Bridgewater State dominated the match with a 23-2 advantage on draw controls and outshot Wheelock, 42-6, including 20-2 in the second half.  The shutout was the first for the Bears since a 20-0 road win at Thomas College on April 18, 2009.

Geary also added three goals and an assist to her night for the Bears, collecting all four of her points in the first 11 minutes of the contest.  She also picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Clancy assisted on four goals in the opening 22 minutes of the contest and scored all four of her goals in the second half.  She also registered a game-high 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.

Bridgewater State scored 10 goals in the first 11 minutes of the match, including a pair each from sophomore attacker Riley Cachelin (Westwood, MA) and senior attacker Jill Caramello (Duxbury, MA), while junior attacker Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, MA) found the back of the net three times in the initial period of play.  Sophomore defender Katharine Trahan (Burlington, MA), freshman defender Mariah McKenna (Plymouth, MA) and freshman midfielder Amanda Goguen (Medford, MA) each notched a marker in the first half as well for the Bears.  The visitors took a 13-0 lead into the intermission.

Bridgewater State kept the pressure on in the second half with six goals in the first 10 minutes of the stanza to take a 19-0 advantage with 21:40 left in the contest.  Cachelin scored a pair of goals in the half for the Bears, while freshman attacker Alexis Hadcock (East Lyme, CT), Goguen, Appleman and McKenna each tallied a goal apiece in the second half.

Cachelin totaled six points on four goals and two assists to go with a pair of ground balls for Bridgewater State, while Hadcock finished with five assists, a goal, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.  Senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, MA) racked up four helpers in addition to three draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover.

Junior midfielder Christina Cubera (Baltimore, MD)led the Wildcats with a career-high seven caused turnovers to go with five ground balls and a draw control, while freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Donnelly (Atkinson, NH)came up with four ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers. Freshman attacker Anna Shuqom (Brookline, MA)also contributed with a career-best four ground balls and caused a turnover.

Freshman goaltender Chandler Ross (Wrentham, MA) stopped all four shots she faced in the first 47:32 of action for the Bears, before yielding to sophomore goalie Jessica Polaski (Agawam, MA), who was untested in the final 12:28 of play to combine on the shutout. Junior Monica Bettle (Pembroke, MA)made 11 saves for Wheelock.

The Wildcats will be in action again on Saturday, April 27 when they travel to Chicopee, MA to take on New England Collegiate Conference foe Elms College at 5:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State travels to Buzzards Bay, MA to take on Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match-up at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Geary recorded 17 draws for the second straight game and increased her BSU single-season record to 149….Earlier this season, Geary set the Bears' single-game mark with 20 draws in a 24-7 win over Worcester State on April 6th...Geary ranks in the top five in all of Division III in draws.
