Women's Lacrosse Opens MASCAC Play with 23-6 Win over Fitchburg

RINDGE, N.H. - Senior attack Jill Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) notched a career high eight goals and added a pair of assists to lead the undefeated Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 23-6 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over host Fitchburg State University on Saturday.

The game marked the MASCAC opener for both teams. The Bears improve to 6-0 (1-0 MASCAC) on the season, while the Falcons slip to 1-3 (0-1 MASCAC).

Eight different players scored for the Bears who opened up an 8-3 lead at the intermission and cruised to the win. The final score of 23-6 marked Bridgewater's largest lead of the game.

The Bears dominated from start to finish outshooting the Falcons by a margin of 48-12. Bridgewater also held a 21-10 advantage in controlled draws.

Along with her ten-point game, Caramello also notched four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) added five goals and two assists to go along with nine draw controls and four ground balls. Geary ranks among the top five in all of Division III in draws as she is averaging nine per game.

BSU junior midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in with three goals and two assists as well as six ground balls, five draws and three caused turnover. Senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) scored two goals and registered an assist, two draws and two caused turnovers, while freshman attack Alexis Hadcock (East Lyme, Conn.) tallied a goal and a pair of assists.

Freshman goaltender Chandler Ross (Wrentham, Mass.) made six saves between the pipes for the Bears as she was making her second straight start.

Also filling the scoresheet for Bridgewater were junior attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.), sophomore attack Amanda Liebetruth (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), senior defender Michelle Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore attack Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.). Appleman notched two goals and an assists, while Liebetruth registered a goal and a helper.  Navoni finished with a goal and Cachelin added an assist.

Fitchburg freshman netminder Elizabeth Darrigo (Billerica, Mass.) made 22 saves in a little over 52 minutes of action. Junior Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt.) finished the game and recorded three saves.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday night as the Bears entertain the University of New England Nor'Easters at six, while the Falcons travel to Rivier College for a seven o'clock game with the Raiders.
