Women's Lacrosse Posts 20-9 Victory over Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Junior Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) notched two goals and five assists to lead the Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team to a 20-9 non-conference victory over Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears remain unbeaten on the season as they improve to 3-0, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 0-4.

Appleman paced Bridgewater with her nine points, while sophomore Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) led the Bears with four goals. Senior Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) and senior Jill Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) added three goals apiece.

Senior Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) led the Chargers with three goals. Sophomore Michelle Upham (Chelsea, Vt.) added two goals.

Bridgewater scored three of the game's first four goals in a 14 minute span. The Bears began to create separation and held a comfortable lead after scoring four goals in three minutes towards the end of the first frame. Cachelin had a pair of tallies in that stretch to help lead the Bears to an 11-5 halftime advantage.

The Bears led 15-5 eight minutes into the second half after scoring four straight goals from four different players.

Trailing 18-6 with 12 minutes remaining, the Chargers rattled off three straight goals from Upham, senior Ashley Reis (Stowe, Vt.) and sophomore Carly Baker (Beverly, Mass.).

Bridgewater responded with a pair of goals from junior Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) to end the game 20-9.

Sophomore goalie Jessica Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) earned the win and made eight saves. Freshman Jodi Dumayne (Claremont, N.H.) had nine stops in the loss.

Bridgewater held a 31-19 shot advantage as well as a 19-12 edge in draws.

Colby-Sawyer will play at Salem State on Wednesday at 4:00 pm. The Bears host Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
