Women's Lacrosse Downs RIC, 18-7

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten on the season as the Bears posted an 18-7 win over non-conference foe Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Bears improve to 2-0 with the win and have outscored their opponents 36-10 in the two games.  RIC falls to 0-1 as the Anchorwomen were playing in their season-opener.

After junior attack Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, R.I.) staked RIC to an early 1-0 lead, Bridgewater scored the next eight goals to take control of the contest.  The Bears went into the intermission with a 13-4 advantage and were never seriously threatened.

Sophomore attack Riley Cachelin (Westwood, Mass.) and freshman attack Alexis Hadcock (East Lyme, Conn.) paced the hosts with seven points apiece as they each tallied five goals and two assists. Cachelin netted three of her five goals in a span of just under two minutes during the Bears' 8-0 first half run.  Hadcock also potted three first-half goals including two during the run.

The Anchorwomen kept Bridgewater off the scoreboard for the first ten minutes of the second half and had a golden opportunity to get back into the game.  RIC, however, managed just a pair of goals by sophomore attach Danielle Landon (Wading River, N.Y.) over that stretch to cut the deficit to 13-6.

The Bears would reel off five straight goals, including two apiece by Cachelin and Hadcock, to put the game well out of reach.

Freshman midfielder Lauren Geary (Hull, Mass.) added three goals for Bridgewater, while senior midfielder Shelby Farland (Fiskdale, Mass.) netted two goals and an assist.  Junior attack Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of goals and freshman midfielder Mary Roche (Arlington, Mass.) came off the bench to tally a goal and two assists.

BSU sophomore netminder Jessica Polaski (Agawam, Mass.) registered seven saves to post her second win of the season.  Polaski also recorded five ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Junior midfielder Taylor Clancy (Braintree, Mass.) led the Bears' defensive effort and transition game with five caused turnovers and four ground balls to go along with three controlled draws.

Along with her three goals, Geary added seven controlled draws, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  She has amassed 16 draw controls over the Bears' first two games.

Junior goaltender Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) turned aside 14 shots for RIC in the loss as the Anchorwomen were outshot by a margin of 40-17. Signoriello finished with two goals, two assists and five draws, while Landon notched three goals and an assist to go along with three draws.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater travels to Wheaton College on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Lyons at 3:30, while RIC hosts Mercy College on Wednesday at four.
