Manning Leads Women's Lacrosse to 17-9 Win

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) scored a season-high five goals and assisted on another to lead the Bridgewater State College women's lacrosse team to a 17-9 non-conference win over Wellesley College this afternoon in Bridgewater.

Manning also added four ground balls, five draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Bears who improve to 3-1 on the season.  Wellesley dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

BSC junior midfielder Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) chipped in with three goals and two assists, while freshman midfielder Michelle Navoni (Mansfield, MA) also scored three goals.  Junior attack Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) added a pair of goals, including the 200th point of her career, as she became the sixth player in program history to achieve the milestone. 

The Bears used a decided 15-1 edge in draw controls over the first 30 minutes to take a 11-4 lead into the intermission.  Bridgewater opened the first half by scoring the first four goals of the game, and closed it out with a 3-0 run.  Manning tallied four goals and an assist in the opening stanza, while Lennon scored twice and added two helpers.

A free position goal by Wellesley freshman midfielder Elizabeth Clemetson (Freeport, ME) opened the second half, but Bridgewater answered with a five straight goals by five different scorers to put the game out of reach.

Bridgewater held a 22-6 advantage in draw controls for the game as well as a 33-24 edge in shots.  The Bears were 4-for-6 in free position attempts, while Wellesley converted on 5 of 6 free position opportunities.

Senior midfielder Loretta White (Northampton, MA) paced the Blue with three goals, and freshman attack Meagan Fuchs (Portland, OR) added a pair of markers.

Senior netminder Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) turned aside 11 shots to record her third win of the season between the pipes for the Bears.  Wellesley junior Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) also made 11 saves in the losing effort for the Blue.

Bridgewater State will travel to Roger Williams University next Monday for a non-conference game with the Hawks at 4 PM.  Wellesley also returns to action next week as the Blue travel to the Baltimore, Maryland area for a Tuesday afternoon game at Stevenson University (4:00) followed by a Thursday afternoon game at Goucher College (4:00).
