Jones Ties School Marks in 27-15 NEWLA Win over Castleton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Sophomore Jenny Jones (Framingham, MA) tied the school records with ten goals and 13 points to lead the Bridgewater State College Bears to a 27-15 New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) victory over Castleton State College this afternoon in Bridgewater.

With win, the Bears improve to 10-4 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference play with a perfect 5-0 NEWLA mark. Bridgewater has won 14 straight games against conference opponents since rejoining the alliance prior to the start of the 2008 season.  Castleton State drops to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the NEWLA.

Jones tied the school goal scoring mark which was originally set by BSC Hall of Famer Susan Larson in 1986 against Pine Manor and equaled by Andrea Erickson in 1989 versus Babson. Paula Habel, BSC's all-time scoring leader, tallied 13 points in a 2002 game against NEWLA rival Worcester State.

Bridgewater controlled play in the first half as the Bears took a 17-7 lead into the intermission.  A pair of goals by Jones early in the second half gave BSC a 19-8 advantage with 27 minutes remaining.

Castleton tallied the next seven goals to cut the deficit to four (19-15) with 11:24 to play.  The Spartans however would not score again as the Bears notched the final eight goals of the game highlighted by five goals from Jones during the run.

BSC outshot the Spartans by a margin of 51-24 and held a 25-19 advantage in draw controls.

Freshman Kristin White (Pelham, MA) added four goals and five assists for the Bears.  Sophomore Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA) chipped in with three goals and four assists, while junior Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY) tallied three goals and three assists.

Junior Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA) recorded four goals and an assist to go along with an impressive 11 draw controls and six ground balls.  Junior netminder Meghan Griffin (Billerica, MA) made eight saves to notch her ninth win of the season.

Junior Stephanie Pearce (Shoreham, NY) paced the Spartans with three goals and two assists while sophomore Elizabeth Haggerty (Centerport, NY) and junior Nicole Adams (Rutland, VT) scored four goals apiece. Adams also added seven draw controls.  Sophomore Marie VanDerKar (Manchester, VT) chipped in with a goal and two assists to go along with seven ground balls and four draws.

Bridgewater will travel to Becker College on Saturday (1:00) for a conference game with the Hawks. Castleton hosts NEWLA rival Westfield State College on Saturday at noon.
