Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten with 69-56 Win over Regis

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team posted a 69-56 victory over visiting Regis College on Thursday night at the Tinsley Center.

The Bears remain unbeaten on the season as they improve to 4-0, while the Pride fall to 0-2.

Junior guard Sydney Bradbury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with a game-high 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, a pair of steals and a blocked shot. Senior guard Hannah Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) added ten points, two steals and a block in 21 minutes off the bench for the Bears, while senior guard Olivia Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) tallied nine points and five boards. Freshman center Jannise Avelino (Peabody, Mass.) checked in with seven points, ten rebounds (five offensive) and three steals in her collegiate debut.

Senior forward Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) led the way for Regis as she posted a double-double with ten points and a game-best 14 rebounds including six off the offensive glass. Searcy also recorded four steals and four blocked shots. Sophomore guard Kristin Barrett (Plymouth, Mass.) scored a team-high 16 points for the Pride in 26 minutes off the bench and added three steals, while junior forward Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) notched nine points, ten boards (four offensive) and a pair of steals.

Bridgewater led 30-28 following a tightly-contest first half. Trailing 14-12, the Bears used an 13-2 run over the final 35 second of the opening period and first 3 1/2 minutes of the second quarter to pull ahead, 25-16. Bradbury scored six points during the spurt. After back-to-back layups by Searcy and senior guard Marissa Prall (Hopkinton, Mass.), Olivia Dziadyk drained a three-pointer to make it a 28-20 game with 3:45 remaining in the quarter. Highlighted by six points from Barrett, the Pride closed out the first half with an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 30-28 heading into the break.

The BSU defense held the Pride to just a pair of free throws over the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Bears reeled off 14 points, including five from Avelino, during that span to open up a 44-30 lead. Bridgewater would take a 53-39 advantage into the fourth quarter and got up by as many as 21 points (61-40) in the period. The Bears would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter with the Pride getting no closer than 12.

The Bears (37%) and Pride (33%) both shot under 40% from the floor for the game and the two teams combined to shoot just 4-for-30 from behind the arc.

Bridgewater went 11-for-15 (73%) at the free throw line, while Regis connected on 14 of 22 (64%) free throw attempts.

The game also featured 50 turnovers with the Pride turning the ball over 29 times.

Bridgewater held a 50-43 rebounding advantage for the game including a 19-14 edge on the offensive glass which led to a 20-10 differential in second chance points. The Bears also outscored the Pride in the paint by a margin of 46-32.

Junior guards Sophia Gaucher (Lakeville, Mass.) and Kylee Piché (Bridgewater, Mass.) added eight points apiece for the Bears. Gaucher also pulled down six rebounds and registered two steals, while Piché tallied a pair of steals and a blocked shot.

The Bears are back in action this weekend when they travel to New York University for the NYU Tip-Off Classic. Bridgewater will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday night at seven, and Thiel College on Sunday afternoon at one. The Pride head to WPI on Saturday for a two o'clock game with the Engineers.
