Colby Cruises to 84-48 Win over Wesley

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Colby College women's basketball team breezed to an 84-48 victory over Wesley College in the semifinal round of The Cave Classic hosted by Bridgewater State University on Saturday

With the win, the Mules advance to the tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon at two against William Smith College. William Smith edged host Bridgewater State, 84-78, in overtime in the other semifinal match-up. Wesley will take on Bridgewater in the consolation game at noon.

Colby dominated from start to finish as the Mules jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back in their season opener.

Freshman center Emily Davis (Sudbury, Mass.) paced the Mules (1-0) with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while senior forward Carlyanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) checked in with 13 points and six boards. Sophomore center Haley Driscoll(Bedford, N.H.) and senior forward Desi Smith (Watertown, Wisc.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Freshman guard Monshea Newsome-Murray (Seaford, Dela.) led the way for Wesley (1-1) with 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior forward Brionna Johnson (Smyrna Dela.) notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.

Colby shot 52% (35-67) from the floor, including 10-for-21 (48%) from behind the arc. The Mules also held the Wolverines to just 26% (19-74) shooting. Colby assisted on 26 of its 35 made field goals, while Wesley finished with no assists on 19 field goals.
