Colby Women's Basketball Captures The Cave Classic Title

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Led by tournament MVP Carlyanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine), the Colby College women's basketball team captured The Cave Classic title as the Mule cruised to a 72-39 championship game victory over William Smith College on Saturday afternoon at the Tinsley Center.

The Mules led from start to finish as they jumped out to a 12-7 lead after one quarter of play and led 31-19 at the intermission. Colby put the game well out of reach with a dominating performance in the third quarter. The Mules outscored the Herons, 25-10, in the period as they opened up a decided 56-29 advantage. The final score of 72-39 marked the largest lead of the game.

Wolfington tallied 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting including 4-for-6 from behind the arc. The senior guard also added three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Wolfington averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds at the tournament and connected on 7 of 11 three-point attempts.

Freshman center Emily Davis (Sudbury, Mass.) also earned All-Tournament honors for the Mules. Davis came off the bench to tally 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting to go along with four rebounds (three offensive) in the win over William Smith.

Sophomore center Haley Driscoll (Bedford, N.H.) and senior guard Mia Diplock (Vienna, Maine) contributed 11 points apiece for Colby. Driscoll added six rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot, while Diplock also recorded three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Junior forward Gabrielle Eure (East Syracuse, N.Y.) paced the Herons with ten points and 13 rebounds as she recorded her second double-double of the tournament. Eure, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added an assist, a block and a steal, and five of her game-high 13 boards came off the offensive glass.

Colby shot 44% (29-66) for the game, including 7-for-17 (41%) from three-point range. The Mules held the Herons to 29% (15-52) shooting and forced 26 turnovers. Colby held a decided 29-3 advantage in points off turnovers.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday evening. The Mules (2-0) host Thomas College at seven, while the Herons (1-2) travel to SUNY Cortland for a five o’clock game with the Red Dragons.
