Women's Basketball Captures Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic Title

Springfield, Mass. -- Led by tournament Most Outstanding Player Michaela Cosby (Walpole, Mass.), the Bridgewater State University women's basketball team defeated host Springfield College, 75-51, this afternoon to win the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic at SC's Blake Arena. Swarthmore College defeated Eastern Connecticut State earlier to win the consolation game, 63-46.

In the afternoon's second game, Bridgewater State parlayed the play of four double-digit scorers to win the tournament championship. Tallying 15 points each were Cosby and Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass.), while Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) and Alana Watkins (Wareham, Mass.) each scored 12.

With the win, the Bears raised their record to 8-2, while Springfield fell to 2-8.

For the Pride, only freshman Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored in double figures with 15 points.

It was the home team which got off to a good start, as SC led by a count of 7-2 at 3:41 into the game. Lewis scored five of her 15 points in that span.

But a three-point shot by Homich would cut the lead to 9-8. Then Cosby scored the next four points, giving the Bears the lead for good at 12-9.

SC managed to hang around at 21-18 when Jessie Klauer (Lunenburg, Mass.) made a jumper with 9:31 left in the half. But that was as close as the Pride would come the rest of the way. Bridgewater State outscored SC, 21-3, through the remainder of the half, and the Bears entered the break with a 39-21 lead.

Williamson had 10 of her 12 points by halftime to lead her squad, while Lewis had eight of her 15 at that juncture for SC.

Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y.) scored the first hoop of the second half, cutting the margin to 16 (39-23). But when Homich hit two free throws with 10:09 left in the game, the Bears opened up their largest lead at 65-29.

Springfield would make some inroads to whittle the margin to 22 points on a final hoop by Alyssa Unikewicz (Portland, Conn.) with 42 seconds left (73-51). But a lay-up by Brittany Deely (Arlington, Mass.) with nine seconds to go gave the Bears their final spread.

Sandwiched around the halves, Bridgewater State at one point had outscored SC, 40-8.

Homich also had six assists and three steals to go along with her 15 points. She went 4-for-7 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Cosby had four assists, one block, and one steal to go along with her 15 points and seven rebounds. She was also 6-of-9 from the floor.

For the game, the Bears shot .456 from the field, and made seven three-pointers. Springfield managed to hit at a .352 clip. Springfield did win the battle of the boards, 46-27, but was charged with 28 turnovers while forcing only 13.

Along with Cosby, Homich also earned all-tournament honors for the Bears.  Lewis and Tamara Tribble (White Plains, N.Y.) of host Springfield, Shannon McCourt (New Fairfield, Conn.) of Eastern Connecticut and Eliza Polli (Hanover, N.H.) of Swarthmore rounded out the All-Tournament Team.
