Women's Basketball Falls to RIC, 63-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island College women's basketball team topped Bridgewater State, 63-54, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at The Murray Center.

Junior forward Megan Boutilette (Charlton, MA) registered a game-high 14 points to go along five rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Bears (2-1) in their first loss of the season. Senior guard Michaela Cosby (Walpole, MA), totaled 11 points, seven steals, four rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore guard Megan Sewall (Portsmouth, RI) registered eight assists and eight rebounds, while senior forward Courtney Burns (Rockland, MA) tallied 11 points and gathered nine boards to lead the Anchorwomen.

Junior guard Stephanie Prusko (Lincoln, RI) came off the bench to score 10 points, while freshman forward Vandell Andrade (Providence, RI) chipped in with nine points and six rebounds for Rhode Island College (2-1). The Anchorwomen were keyed by their success on the glass as RIC outrebounded the Bears, 49-27, and corralled 15 offensive caroms as a team.

After going into halftime with a 30-27 lead, the Anchorwomen led by eight with 14:49 on the clock in the second frame, but watched as Bridgewater State bounced back with seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to just one with 12:36 remaining. However, the Anchorwomen responded with a 16-6 run of their own over the course of the next 10 minutes to seal the win.

The Anchorwomen shot 44 percent (24-for-54) from the floor, while Bridgewater State shot just 31 percent (19-for-62) from the field. RIC also shot 50 percent (3-for-6) from beyond the arc, while BSU struggled from three-point range knocking down just 3-of-13 (23%) attempts.

Freshman guard Danielle LeBlanc (Warwick, RI) recorded nine points and a pair of assists in 20 minutes of action. Senior guard Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, RI), senior forward Alexia Vega (North Providence, RI) and freshman guard Michelle Lagrotteria (Niantic, CT) finished with six points apiece in the win.

Sophomore guard Alana Watkins (Wareham, MA) chipped in with nine points off the bench for the Bears, while sophomore guard Rachel Kusz (Worcester, MA) added eight points. Junior guard Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, MA) finished with four points and a team-high six assists.

Despite the victory, Rhode Island College finished with 33 turnovers, compared to just 18 for BSU. The Bears also finished with 19 steals as a team.
