Women's Basketball Falls to RIC, 84-68

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Visiting Rhode Island College posted an 84-68 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University on Tuesday evening at the Tinsley Center.

Senior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, R.I.) paced the Anchorwomen (1-1) with 21 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots.  Riley connected on all nine of her field goal attempts.

RIC held a 38-28 halftime advantage and that lead quickly ballooned to 20 as the Anchorwomen scored the first ten points of the second half.  RIC got up by as many as 24 (71-44) in the final stanza before settling for the 16-point win.

Senior guard Cynthia Gaudet (Coventry, R.I.) added 16 points, a game-high seven assists and a pair of steals for RIC, while classmate Stephanie Coro (North Providence, R.I.) chipped in with 14 points, six boards and three steals.  The Anchorwomen shot 52% (28-54) from the floor and knocked down 9 of 18 (50%) three-point attempts.

Senior forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) led the way for the hosts as she registered a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  DePina, who was one of five Bears in double-figure scoring, also blocked two shots and notched three steals.  Junior guard Michaela Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore guard Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) tallied 14 points apiece, while sophomore forward Megan Boutilette (Charlton, Mass.) scored ten points and pulled down eight boards.

The Bears struggled with their shooting throughout the game connecting on 35% (24-69) of their field goal attempts including just 6 of 21 (29%) from three-point range.      

Bridgewater (2-1) hosts UMass Dartmouth next Tuesday at 7:00 PM, while RIC entertains WPI on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
