Women's Basketball Breezes to 83-47 Win over MCLA

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers and shot 59% from the floor as the host Bears breezed to an 83-47 victory over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe MCLA on Thursday night at the Tinsley Center.

Senior guard Brittney Chappron (Braintree, Mass.) came off the bench to score 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, and junior forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) tallied 16 points and five boards as the Bears improved to 13-4 on the season and 4-2 in the MASCAC.  Chappron also added  two assists, two blocks and a pair of steals. MCLA falls to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Bridgewater took complete control of the game at the 2:40 mark of the first half as the Bears ended the opening stanza with a 9-2 run and then promptly outscored the Trailblazers 24-4 over the first nine minutes of the second half.  Bridgewater led by as many as 37 points and easily coasted to the key MASCAC win.

The Bears turned the Trailblazer's 27 turnovers into 38 points and also outscored the visitors by a margin of 52-30 in the paint.  Bridgewater also held MCLA to 32% shooting (20-62) including 0-for-8 from three-point range.

Also finishing in double-figure scoring for the Bears was freshman guard Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) who finished with ten points to go along with three assists and two steals.  Senior guard Corey Cuddihy (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore forward Michaela Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) both had solid all-around games.  Cuddihy notched nine points, five assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals, while Cosby recorded eight points, five boards and a game-high six steals.

Junior forward Courtney Terzi (Little Falls, N.Y.) came off the bench to lead MCLA with 11 points and seven boards. Freshman guard Kaitlyn Chenevert  (Uxbridge, Mass.) added nine points and six caroms, while junior guard Alie Dobrovolc (Little Falls, N.Y.) tallied nine points and four boards.  Junior forward Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points, eight rebound and three blocked shots.

Bridgewater will travel to MASCAC rival Westfield State University on Saturday afternoon for a one o'clock game with the Owls.  MCLA (11-6, 3-2 MASCAC) hosts conference opponent Worcester State University on Saturday at 3:30.
