Women's Basketball Posts 67-57 Win over Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the Framingham State Rams 67-57 tonight in Framingham in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup.

With the win the Bears improve to 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC, while Rams fall to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in conference.

Sophomore guard Elisha Homich (Ludlow, Mass.) led a trio of Bears in double figures as she finished the night with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor.  Senior guard Brittney Chappron (Braintree, Mass.) and junior forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points apiece.  DePina finished the game with a double-double as she grabbed a team-high 10 boards.

The Rams were led by freshman Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) who scored a game-high 20 points including 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.  Senior Nicole McConaghy (Medford, Mass.) was the only other Ram to record double figures with 11 points.  Sophomore Kia Minor (Edgartown, Mass.) was a point away from her fifth double double of the season as she finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

In a back and forth first half that saw three ties and three lead changes with neither team holding a lead larger than five, the Bears capitalized on 12 first half Ram turnovers which they converted into 15 points to take a one point lead (34-33) into the break.   Bridgewater State's bench, which outscored the Rams 15-7 in the frame, was led by freshman guard Jenna Williamson (Ludlow, Mass.) who had six first half points and sophomore forward Michaela Cosby (Walpole, Mass.) who added five.

The Bears used a 13-4 run in the opening eight minutes of the second half to take a ten point lead, 47-37.  Over the run, the Bears forced seven turnovers and held the Rams to just 2-for-10 shooting from the floor while DePina and Homich propelled the Bear offense scoring four points apiece on the run.  The Rams were able to pull within five, 60-55, on a jumper by Minor with 1:32 left in the game, but Williamson and Chappron combined to hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Bridgewater State's bench outscored the Rams 23-7 in the game and the Bears held a 41-34 advantage on the glass.

The Rams return to action on Saturday at Worcester State at 3 p.m., while the Bears return to action Thursday night at UMass Boston at 5:30 p.m.
