Women's Basketball Bows to Point Loma Nazarene, 75-53

SAN DIEGO, CA -- The Bridgewater State College women's basketball team dropped a 75-53 decision to host Point Loma Nazarene University at the 2009 Surf 'N Slam San Diego Hoop Classic.  Bridgewater State (3-6) will wrap up tournament play on Wednesday at 6:00 PM (EST) as the Bears take on Simpson College.   

Sophomore forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, MA) paced the visiting Bears with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals.  Senior forward Michaela Johnson (Riverside, RI) contributed  ten points and three boards, while freshman forward Michaela Cosby (Walpole, MA) added eight points, five rebounds (all offensive) and three assists.  

Senior forward Colleen Planeta (Surprise, AZ) led the way for the host Sea Lions as she posted a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds.  Planeta also added five blocks and four steals.   

Bridgewater trailed 34-26 at the intermission and was down by 11 points (39-28) with 18:44 remaining in the second half.  The Bears then put together a 12-3 run, highlighted by five points from DePina, to pull to within a basket (42-40) with 15:19 left to play.   

Point Loma Nazarene (10-1) then took control of the game from that point on.  The Sea Lions tallied the next 12 points and outscored the Bears 32-4 over an 11 minute stretch.  

Bridgewater State shot 33% (22-for-67) from the floor and were just 2-for-15 from three-point range.  The Bears also attempted nine free throws as opposed to 30 attempts from the charity stripe for Point Loma.
