Bridgewater, William Paterson Advance to Tip-Off Title Game

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College and William Paterson University advanced to the championship game of the 2009 BSC D'Angelo Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic this evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.  Host Bridgewater State downed Eastern Nazarene College, 82-57, in the first semifinal game, while William Paterson cruised to an 85-47 victory over Clark University.  

Bridgewater and Williams Paterson will meet in the tournament championship game on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM.  Eastern Nazarene and Clark will play in the consolation game at 1.  

Junior guard Brittney Chappron (Braintree, MA) and sophomore forward Monica-Sabina Bharoocha (North Smithfield, RI) paced the host Bears in the win over Eastern Nazarene as they scored 21 points and 20 points respectively.  Chappron connected on 10 of 15 field goal attempts and added four rebounds and three assists.  Bharoocha finished 9 of 14 from the floor and also dished out a game-high eight assists to go along with three rebounds and three steals.  

Trailing 4-2 early, Bridgewater went on a 15-2 run to take control of the game.  The Bears got up by as many as 17 points (27-10) before Eastern Nazarene went on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to nine points (31-22) with 3:31 left in the half.  BSC, however, outscored the Lions, 12-5, over the final 3 1/2 minutes to take a 43-27 lead into the locker room. The Bears' lead ballooned to as many as 32 points in the second half before settling for the 82-57 victory.  

Freshman guard Michaela Cosby (Walpole, MA) added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bears in her collegiate debut.  Junior forward Carolyn Swanson (Stoughton, MA) contributed eight points off the bench, while freshman Elisha Homich (Ludlow, MA) added seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals also off the bench.  

Bridgewater connected on 37 of 74 (50%) field goal attempts, and also held a 40-35 rebounding edge.  The Bears also forced 27 turnovers thanks in large part to 16 steals.  Eastern Nazarene shot 42% (23-for-55) for the game.  

Freshman center Shardae Brown (Waterbury, CT) paced the visiting Lions with 14 points on 6 of 6 shooting.  She also grabbed five rebounds.  Eastern Nazarene also received 11 points and four boards from senior guard Christine Tucker (Antioch, CA) and 10 points and four rebounds from senior center Jessica Schoppee (Scarborough, ME).   

In the second game of the night, William Paterson outscored Clark 19-2 over the first 7 1/2 minutes and never looked back.  The Pioneers led 56-27 at the half and got up by as many as 47 points (85-38) in the second stanza before settling for the 85-47 victory.  

The win was the 300th career coaching victory for Williams Paterson's Erin  Monahan.  Monahan has a career record of 300-134 in 17 seasons as the Pioneers head coach.  

Sophomore forward April Smith (Barnegat, NJ) led the way for William Paterson with 18 points and six rebounds.  Freshman guard BriAnna Lucas (Hamilton, NY) added 16 points and five assists, while freshman guard Lindsey Callander (Somerville, MA) chipped in with 11 points.  

William Paterson shot 45% (31-for-69) from the floor and forced 32 turnovers.  The Pioneers also held a slight 40-37 edge in rebounding.  Clark connected on just 15 of 46 field goals attempts, but did hit on 5 of 10 three-pointers.  

Sophomore guard Ivory Aiken (Harlem, NY) paced the Cougars with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
