Women's Hoops Defeats UMass Boston, 72-48

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State College women's basketball team knocked off visiting UMass Boston, 72-48, in a non-conference contest this evening at the Tinsley Center in Bridgewater.

Bridgewater State (6-7) scored the first ten points of the game and never looked back.  The Bears led 38-17 at the half and got up by as many as 32 points before settling for the 72-48 victory.

Junior guards Brittany Chappron (Braintree, MA) and Corey Cuddihy (Scituate, MA) paced the host Bears with 12 and 11 points apiece. Chappron added three steals, two rebounds and two assists, while Cuddihy connected on 3 of 5 three-point field goals and also notched three assists, two rebounds and two steals. 

Sophomore forward Monica-Sabina Bharoocha (North Smithfield, RI) notched 11 points off the bench as she was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.  Junior guard Heather McPherson (Mansfield, MA) also came off the bench to score nine points.  She contributed three assists and two rebounds as well.  All told, ten different players scored for the Bears.

Bridgewater shot 52% (28-for-54) for the game including 9 of 18 from three-point range.  The Bears also forced 26 turnovers thanks in large part to 19 steals.  Sophomore forward Shelly DePina (New Bedford, MA), who also scored eight points, registered a game-high five steals.

UMass (4-9) was led by sophomore forward Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) who finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists and one block.  Junior forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) added ten points and six boards.

UMass held a 40-23 rebounding advantage including an 18-6 edge on the offensive glass.  Freshman guard Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) pulled down seven offensive boards and eight total.  The Beacons, however, shot just 35% (18-for-51) from the field and were 2-for-16 from behind the arc.
