BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman shortstop Sydney Schaefer has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Rookie of the Week.

A native of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Schaefer began her collegiate career in fine fashion as she batted .433 (13-40) with four doubles, a triple, a walk, two stolen bases, four runs scored and nine RBI in nine games for the Bears last week at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Little River and North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She also posted a .633 slugging percentage.

Schaefer went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, a run and three RBI in a 9-1 win over Penn State-Beaver; 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI in a 10-7 setback to Immaculata; 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a run and an RBI in an 8-6 victory over Penn State-Abington; 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in a 9-1 triumph over Cedar Crest; 1-for-3 with a walk and a run in a 12-8 win over Penn College; 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in a 5-4 victory over Saint Elizabeth; and 1-for-3 with a double in a 3-0 loss to Penn State-Harrisburg.

The BSU softball team is currently 6-3 on the young season. The Bears entertain the Cadets of Norwich University in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Game one is slated to get underway at 12:30.
