Softball Drops Pair of Games to UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The UMass Dartmouth softball team swept a doubleheader with regional rival Bridgewater State University on Tuesday afternoon at the UMD Softball Field.

The Corsairs (6-6) posted a 3-1 win in the opener and completed the sweep with a 15-1 (5 inn.) mercy rule victory in game two. The Bears fall to 7-6 with the pair of setbacks.

Game One: UMass Dartmouth 3, Bridgewater State I

Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) tossed a complete game one-hitter to lead the Corsairs to the 3-1 victory in the opener. Shirshac (4-4) allowed just one unearned run with no walks and seven strikeouts. She also hit two batters.

Olivia Hargreaves (Weare, N.H.) pitched well in the setback for the Bears. Hargreaves (2-1) went the distance giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. She also plunked two batters.

UMass got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sydney Menz (Stoughton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a Kinu Takasugi (South Pasadena, Calif.) single up the middle. Takasugi then stole second and Menz trotted home on an errant throw by the catcher. One out later, Takasugi stole third and raced home on a slow hit grounder to the pitcher.

The Bears capitalized on a UMD error to cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth inning. Riley Fitzgerald (Swansea, Mass.) singled with one out and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt. Fitzgerald scored when Hargreaves reached on an error.

The Corsairs got the run right back in the home half of the fifth to cap off the scoring. Menz was hit by a pitch and moved to third following back-to-back sacrifice bunts. Dyonna Rodas (Warwick, R.I.) followed with a walk and kept running to second attempting to draw a throw. Menz would score on an errant throw by the BSU pitcher.

Rodas (1-2, BB) and Menz (2 HBP) each reached safely twice to pace the UMD offense.

Fitzgerald recorded the Bears' lone hit of the game as she rapped a single up the middle to break up Shirshac's no-hit bid with one out in the top of the fifth inning.

Game Two: UMass Dartmouth 15, Bridgewater State 1 (5 Inn.)

UMass produced plenty of offense in game two as the Corsairs banged out 14 hits and added five walks in the 15-1 mercy rule victory. UMass scored at least two runs in every inning including four in the first, five in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth.

Rodas went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, three runs and an RBI to lead the way for the hosts in game two. Menz (2-3, SB, 2RBI) and Olivia Silva (Swansea, Mass.) also registered mulitple hits for the Corairs. Silva was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs and two RBI.

Takasugi (1-1, BB, 2R), Hailey Soares (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Larissa Piessens (Windham, N.H.) all reached safely twice for UMD. Perregaux went 1-for-2 with a double, a sacrfice fly, a run and three RBI.

Rahne Turley (Sandwich, Mass.) went all five innings in the circle for UMass to earn her second win of the season. Turley (2-2) allowed just one run on five hits with a walk.

Makayla Ansell (Menifee, Calif.), Janet Jolly (Raynham, Mass.), Sydney Schaefer (Swarthmore, Pa.), Victoria Becker (Abington, Mass.) and Angelina Lynch (Taunton, Mass.) tallied one hit apiece for the Bears. Ansell singled and scored on an RBI single by Schaefer in the top of the first inning to give the visitors the early 1-0 lead.

Two BSU pitchers combined to give up 15 runs (12 earned) on 14 hits in four innings with five walks and four wild pitches.

The Bears committed four errors in game two, six total on the afternoon and now have 30 miscues in 13 games this season.

Up Next: The Bears travel to UMass Boston on Thursday afternoon for a 2:30 doubleheader with the Beacons.

Notes: Bridgewater is 31-24-2 versus UMass since 1983 (19-14-2 on the road). The Corsairs, however, are 6-0-1 versus the Bears over the last seven meetings.
