Three Bears Named to All-MASCAC Softball Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Three Bridgewater State University student-athletes have been selected to the 2017 All-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Team which was announced today by the league’s Director of Media Relations, Emily Diekelmann.

Sophomore outfielder Kacie Carvalho (Fairhaven, Mass.) garnered first team honors to highlight the Bears' three representatives. Carvalho is joined on the squad by senior second baseman Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.) and freshman third baseman Shannon Grindle (Halifax, Mass.). Leddy and Grindle earned second team accolades.

Carvalho is making her second straight appearances on the All-MASCAC First Team, while Leddy was a first team selection in 2015. 

Carvalho excelled at the plate this season as she batted .386 (44-114) with three doubles, 26 runs scored, eight runs batted in and six stolen bases to go along with a .412 slugging percentage as well as a .426 on base percentage. 

Carvalho ranked third in the MASCAC in hits, fifth in batting average and ninth in both runs and on base percentage. 

In 62 games over two seasons with the Bears, Carvalho has a career batting average of .415 (73-176) with five doubles, three triples, eight stolen bases 41 runs scored and 19 RBI.

Leddy started all 35 games at second base in 2017. She batted .358 (44-123) with 5 doubles, a triple, 24 runs scored and 18 RBI to go along with a .415 slugging percentage and a .388 on base percentage.

Leddy ranked third overall in the MASCAC in hits. She also finished second in the conference with 12 double plays turned. 

In 143 games over four seasons with the Bears, Leddy posted a career batting average of .334 (152-455) with 18 doubles, six triples, 99 runs scored, 59 RBI. She also recorded a career .400 slugging percentage, as well as a .366 on base percentage. 

Grindle put together an impressive rookie campaign in 2017 as she batted .364 (43-118) in 35 games with ten doubles, a pair of home runs, 15 runs scored and 34 runs batted in. Grindle also produced a .500 slugging percentage as well as a .402 on base percentage.

Grindle finished second in the MASCAC in RBI as well as fifth in both hits and doubles. She also ranked seventh in home runs and batting average, and ninth in slugging. 

The BSU softball team finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 15-20 with a 7-7 mark in the MASCAC standings. Seeded fifth in the MASCAC Tournament, the Bears dropped a 9-4 decision to #4 Worcester State University in the opening round of the tournament.
