Kelly McCarthy Named MASCAC Softball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the third time this season, Bridgewater State University junior first baseman/pitcher Kelly McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Player of the Week.

A product of Burlington, Massachusetts, McCarthy batted .417 (5-12) with a home run, a double, four runs scored and five RBI with a .750 slugging percentage in a 2-2 week for the Bears.

McCarthy went 3-for-6 with a home run, double, four runs and four RBI in a MASCAC doubleheader split with Salem State. She was also 2-for-6 at the plate with a run batted in as the Bears' split a conference twinbill with Westfield State.

McCarthy also made three starts in the circle for the Bears as she went 1-1 with a pair of complete games. In 18 innings of work, McCarthy posted an earned run average of 1.94 with seven strikeouts.

Through 22 games this season, McCarthy is batting .440 (33-75) with three home runs, two doubles, 11 runs and 19 RBI. She is 9-5 in 16 pitching appearances (15 starts) with 12 complete games and three shutouts, while sporting a 1.61 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings of work.

Offensively, McCarthy leads the MASCAC in hits (33) and ranks second in runs batted in and total bases (44), and third in home runs. She is also first among conference pitchers in wins, complete games, shutouts, ERA and innings pitched.

In 97 game over her first three seasons with the Bears, McCarthy has produced a career .339 batting average (94-277) with 12 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 40 runs scored and 63 RBI. She is also 18-12 over 37 career appearances (28 starts) in the circle with a 1.94 ERA, 21 complete games, seven shutouts and 123 strikeouts in 191 2/3 innings of work.

The season continues for the BSU softball team on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears (11-11) host a pair of games with Southeastern Massachusetts rival Wheaton College with game one getting underway at 3:30.
