Kelly McCarthy Named MASCAC Softball Player & Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior first baseman/pitcher Kelly McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Player & Pitcher of the Week.

McCarthy put on a tremendous performance in the circle and at the plate during the Bears' doubleheader sweep of Clark University last week. She went 6-for-8 (.750) with a home run, three runs scored and five RBI, and tossed a pair of complete games, including a shutout, giving up two runs in 13 innings of work (1.08 ERA) while striking out 13. 

The Burlington, Massachusetts product tossed a complete game three-hit shutout with no walks and eight strikeouts and was 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run home run in the Bears' 6-0 game one victory. McCarthy also allowed just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in a 10-2 win in game two.

In 12 games this season, McCarthy is batting .488 (21-43) with two home runs, seven runs scored and 14 RBI. She is also sporting a .651 slugging percentage and a .500 on base percentage.

McCarthy has also appeared in nine games in the circle with eight starts. She is currently 6-2 with six complete games, two shutouts, 37 strikeouts and a 1.59 earned run average in 48 1/3 innings of work. Opponents are batting just .208 against her.

McCarthy leads the MASCAC in hits, home runs, runs batted in, wins, complete games and innings pitched. She also ranks second in strikeouts, third in ERA, fourth in batting average, fifth in both slugging and on base percentage and sixth in runs scored.  

In 87 games over her first three seasons with the Bears, McCarthy has produced a career .335 batting average (82-245) with 11 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 36 runs scored and 58 RBI. She is also 15-9 over 30 appearances (21 starts) in the circle with a 2.02 ERA, 15 complete games, six shutouts and 99 strikeouts in 148 2/3 innings of work.

The season continues for the BSU softball team on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears (7-5) entertain the Lyons of Wheaton College. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to get underway at three o'clock.
