Kelly McCarthy Named MASCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University junior right-hander Kelly McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week.

A native of Burlington, Massachusetts, McCarthy went 4-0 with a pair of shutouts and 13 strikeouts while posting a 0.56 earned run average in 25 innings of work as she helped lead the Bears to a 5-1 week.

McCarthy tossed a complete game, six-hit shutout with five strikeouts in a 2-0 MASCAC win over Fitchburg State, and allowed just two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in a 10-2 victory over Curry College. She capped off the week by winning both ends of a doubleheader in a conference sweep of MCLA. McCarthy allowed just one unearned run on five hits with four strikeouts in a 5-1 win in game one, and tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout with two strikeouts in an 8-0 game two triumph.

In 23 appearances in the circle this season including 22 starts, McCarthy is 16-5 with 19 complete games and six shutouts. She is sporting a 1.31 earned run average with 83 strikeouts over 139 1/3 innings of work, and opponents are batting just .219 against her.

McCarthy currently leads the MASCAC in appearances, starts, wins, ERA, complete games, innings pitched and shutouts. She also ranks second in batting average against and is tied for second in strikeouts.

McCarthy has also excelled at the plate this season as she is batting .404 (44-109) with three home runs, five doubles, a triple, 18 runs scored and 26 runs batted in (RBI). She presently ranks second in the conference in RBI, fourth in both hits and homeruns, fifth in total bases (60), ninth in batting average and tenth in slugging percentage.

In 107 game over her first three seasons with the Bears, McCarthy has produced a career ..338 batting average (105-311) with 15 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 47 runs scored and 70 RBI. She is also 25-12 (.676) over 44 career appearances (35 starts) in the circle with a 1.69 ERA, 28 complete games, ten shutouts and 145 strikeouts in 239 2/3 innings of work.

The season continues for the BSU softball team on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears (19-13, 7-3 MASCAC) host a pair of games with conference foe Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Game one of the twinbill is slated to get underway at 3:30.
