Kelly McCarthy Named MASCAC Softball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior first baseman/pitcher Kelly McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Player of the Week.

A product of Burlington, Massachusetts, McCarthy batted .429 (15-35) with a double, a home run, four runs scored and nine RBI in a 5-5 week for the Bears at the season-opening Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. She also produced a .444 on base percentage as well as a .543 slugging percentage.

McCarthy went 3-for-4 with a run scored in a 7-6 win over Eastern Nazarene College; 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in a 9-6 setback to Marian; 1-for-3 with two RBI in a 6-5 win over Pitt-Bradford; 3-for-5 with three RBI in a 13-7 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran; 2-for-3 with a home run in an 8-0 win over Northland; and 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in a 6-2 setback to Kenyon.

McCarthy also appeared in seven games in the circle for the Bears and made six starts as she went 4-2 with four complete games and a shutout. In 35 1/3 innings of work, McCarthy posted an earned run average of 1.78 with 24 strikeouts while opponents batted just .214 against her.

In the 8-0 victory over Northland, McCarthy recorded her second career no-hitter.

In 79 game over her first three seasons with the Bears, McCarthy has produced a career .321 batting average (76-237) with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 33 runs scored and 53 RBI. She is also 13-9 over 28 appearances (19 starts) in the circle with a 2.12 ERA, 13 complete games, five shutouts and 86 strikeouts in 135 2/3 innings of work.

The season continues for the BSU softball team on Friday afternoon as the Bears (5-5) travel to Clark University for a three o'clock non-conference twinbill with the Cougars.
