McCarthy Powers Softball Past RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior pitcher Kelly McCarthy (Burlington, Mass.) picked up wins in both games as Bridgewater State swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bears (9-9) took game one, 12-0 (five innings), then powered past the Anchorwomen (8-4), 6-1, in the nightcap.

McCarthy was masterful in the pitching circle, going 2-0 and allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out 12, in 12 innings of work. She also went 4-for-8 at the plate with two hits in each game.

Freshman designated player Jenny Heller (Taunton, Mass.) reached safely in all six of her plate appearances in the twinbill. Heller finished 4-for-4 with a double, two walks and four runs scored.

Junior second baseman Courtney Leddy (Saugus, Mass.) extended her hitting streak to 13 games as she banged out five hits in eight at bats over the two games with two runs and a pair of RBI.

Senior center fielder Karissa Pagan (Brockton, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI on the day. Junior third baseman Tara McCann (Fall River, Mass.) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one double and three RBI.

In the opener, the Bears pushed across five run in the top of the first, paced by a pair of two-run doubles by junior first baseman Morgan Cox (Dennis Port, Mass.) and sophomore shortstop Kristyna Flaherty (Burlington, Mass.).

BSU added three more runs in the third to build an 8-0 lead, led by RBI singles from Leddy and classmate Samantha LoPilato (Medford, Mass.). McCann capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly.

Bridgewater put the contest away with a four-run fourth, which was highlighted by a two-run double from McCann.

McCarthy allowed just one hit and struck out six to pick up the win.

RIC junior starter Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, R.I.) took the loss (1-2), allowing eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in three innings of work.

The nightcap was scoreless through the first two innings until BSU went up 1-0 in the third by scoring on an Anchorwomen error. BSU broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning to take a 6-0 advantage. Pagan knocked in two with a single and Leddy brought in one more with an RBI single.

The Anchorwomen scored their only run of the day in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, Conn.) rapped an RBI single. 

McCarthy picked up the win, allowing just one run on five hits to go along with six strikeouts. She improved to 8-4 on the season, matching her win total from last season. Leddy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

RIC freshman starter Briana Gough (West Warwick, R.I.) took the loss (3-1), allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits. She struck out two on the day.

Notes: Leddy is batting .438 (21-48) during her 13-game hitting streak....McCarthy has recorded at least one hit in 16 out of the 18 games.
